A tragic accident claimed the life of a cyclist in Central Saanich on Sunday.
On October 20th, a cyclist, a woman in her 40s, was participating in the Tripleshot CrossFondo bike race when she was struck by a pickup truck.
Central Saanich Police confirmed they responded to the scene on the 6400-block of Central Saanich Road, near Tanner Road, shortly after 10 a.m., following reports of the collision.
Emergency responders confirmed that the cyclist had died at the scene.
Police said the driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. Alcohol has been ruled out as a factor in the incident, but further investigation is ongoing.
The organizers have yet to comment on the tragedy, and the identity of the woman remains unknown as of this publication.
The Tripleshot CrossFondo is a popular local bike race, known for taking participants through a variety of terrain across Vancouver Island.
Police are thanking community members in the area for providing aid to the woman until emergency responders arrived.
