CRD issues a boil water advisory for certain areas of Sooke

On Friday, October 25th, the Capital Regional District (CRD) issued a boil water advisory for East Sooke, who draw their drinking water from the Wilderness Mountain Water System. 

The Wilderness Mountain Water System is located near the top of Mount Matheson in East Sooke and provides drinking water to approximately 73 service connections. 

The decision to issue this advisory came after the CRD consulted with Island Health.

Residents of the areas impacted are implored to boil their water before drinking it, and to not drink straight from the tap. 

“Water quality may have been compromised due to high turbidity water originating from the surface water source, Wilfred Reservoir,” said the CRD in a media release.  

“As a precaution, the Boil Water Advisory will be in effect until flushing and water samples indicate the water quality no longer poses a risk to public health.”

The CRD says that the boil water advisory will be rescinded when Island Health is certain that drinking water does not pose a health concern. 

At that time, they will issue an “all clear” notice and the impacted residents will be notified. 

To disinfect tap water in the interim the CRD says that boiling it vigorously for one minute will be effective.
