BC Transit and many local governments throughout the province are offering free transit to all on the final voting day of the 2024 provincial election, Saturday, October 19th.
They are doing this in the hopes that it makes it easier for people to get out and cast a ballot.
According to BC Transit, the decision to offer free transit is up to municipal governments throughout British Columbia.
Transit will be completely free all day on election day in the following Vancouver Island communities:
- Comox Valley (includes handyDART)
- Cowichan Valley – This does not include service on interregional routes 66 and 70. (includes handyDART)
- Port Alberni
- Regional District of Nanaimo – this does not include service on the 70 Nanaimo-Cowichan Express (includes handyDART)
- Salt Spring Island
- Victoria Regional Transit (includes handyDART)

Today, Wednesday, October 16th, is the final day for advance voting and polls will be open until 8 p.m. at all advance polling stations.
According to Elections BC, registered voters can cast their ballot at any advance polling station.
“Voters can vote at any advance voting place in the province, and all advance voting places are wheelchair accessible,” says Elections BC website.
Similarly, on final voting day–when transit is free–voters can go to any open voting place to cast their ballot.
“Voters have an assigned voting place on Final Voting Day, but you can vote at another voting place if it’s more convenient to you.”
