Specific areas along the Gorge Waterway will undergo temporary closures for emergency maintenance this week.
According to BC Hydro, there is an existing underground, oil-insulated transmission cable that is at the end of its serviceable life, and the Victoria to Esquimalt Cable Replacement Project aims to correct this.
To assist with the planning of the routing and constructability of the new cable in and around the Gorge Waterway, a geophysics survey will take place from September 23rd to 27th.
This survey will involve a boat towing equipment that takes high-resolution acoustic images about 30 metres down into the sediment and rock.
Additionally, there will be crews surveying the shoreline during low tide.
This means that it will be closed for both swimmers and watercrafts in the following areas:
The Banfield Park Dock will remain open.
The Victoria to Esquimalt Cable Replacement Project is an emergency project, and is critical to the electricity supply for Greater Victoria.
Installed in 1980, there’s now widespread cable corrosion, which increases the risk of failure. The project will see the latest technology in cables installed for safe and reliable electricity for decades.
