There will be a rare ‘supermoon blue moon’ visible over Victoria next week

Eyes to the skies, Victoria!

Not only is this moon a ‘Blue Moon’—a term that comes from seeing a full moon twice in one month, not because it’s blue—it’s also a supermoon.

A supermoon occurs when a new or full moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, making it appear the biggest and brightest compared to other full moons!

It will peak on Monday, August 19th but it will appear full for approximately three days.

The August supermoon will be the first of four consecutive supermoons this year, so if you miss this one, there’s still time to bask in its mystical glow.

According to NASA, referring to this moon as the ‘Blue Moon’ dates back to records from 1528, and although it’s not entirely clear as to why, speculations claim it came from an earlier phrase meaning ‘betrayer moon.’

And similar to other moons, the Blue Moon goes by many names, including the Algonquin tribes’ use of Sturgeon Moon.

Other names include the Red Moon, the Corn or Green Corn Moon, the Barley Moon, the Herb Moon, the Grain Moon, and the Dog Moon.

This full moon aligns with the Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan, also called Rakhi Purnima, which celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters—a bond of protection, obligation or care.

Are you going to try and catch it, Victoria?
