Any weather predictions for this winter, Victoria?
Whether you’re looking forward to the cozy season or not, fall is fast approaching and it’s time to air out your sweaters and start saving soup recipes.
And if you’re curious about what we might be in store for this year, Farmer’s Almanac officially released their winter forecast and map for Canada on August 26th—which naturally, includes Vancouver Island!
“‘Temperate’ is on tap for most of the country this winter, but let it snow in Ontario!” said Carol Connare, the Almanac’s editor-in-chief.
“A winter of big freezes and heavy snowfall will be centered in Ontario and eastern Manitoba, while most of the rest of the country will get some relief and reprieve from snow shoveling and super-cold temperatures.”
Well, good thing we’re not in Ontario or Manitoba, then!
According to their release, Southern British Columbia is predicted to be a bit chillier this year, but luckily, we’ll reportedly be dealing with lighter snowfalls than usual and below average precipitation.

To predict the weather, The Farmer’s Almanac uses a proprietary method as well as modern technology, including monitoring solar science, climatology and meteorology.
Broken down, this means studying magnetic storms on the sun’s surface, studying weather patterns and the study of atmosphere, respectively.
They compare solar patterns and historical weather conditions with our current solar activity, looking at ‘normals’ and ‘averages’ from across decades, not just how it compares to last year.
For instance, for this year’s winter season, their forecasts are based on weather patterns from 1991 through 2020.
No need to panic quite yet, there’s still a little heat left in the summer, so get your final beach days, camping trips, festivals and market wanderings in!
