Tanya Tagaq, author of the acclaimed novel Split Tooth, visual artist and award-winning musician, has published her first children’s book, It Bears Repeating, which focuses on teaching kids to count.
Additionally, as she celebrates her book release, she will be bringing her powerful force of creativity and expression to a Victoria stage in September.
August 20th marked an exciting day for bookstores everywhere, as anticipation for Tagaq’s new book offers a beautiful celebration of one of the world’s most exquisite animals, the polar bear!
Plus, Tagaq has incorporated some simple Inuktitut words, creating a beautiful educational opportunity to further connect readers with the book and the musicality of languages.
“I love children’s books and children themselves,” Tagaq said.
“I wanted to write this book because learning to count is such a sweet time in a child’s life.”
According to a media release, there are plans to release a video with Tundra Books featuring the pronunciation of the Inuktitut words.

Victoria residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to see her perform live at the UVic Farquhar Auditorium on September 18th at 7 p.m.
She’ll be presenting qiqsaaqtuq, with the Victoria Symphony, and sivunitinni, accompanied by Emily Carr String Quartet.
“I hear sound in three-dimensional textures so sound is music to me,” she said.
“One thing that is often overlooked in my work is the technical abilities that produce the music and compositions. Perhaps this is because I am improvising and the music doesn’t fit into a nice classical box.”
In fact, her musical creations have been described as “extraordinary offerings of soundscapes” that incorporate elements of punk, metal, and electronica blended with throat singing.
