Police say a man and a woman from British Columbia were found dead in a boat that washed ashore on Nova Scotia’s Sable Island on Wednesday, about 300 kilometres southeast of Halifax.
An RCMP news release states that Parks Canada contacted police around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday after a three-metre-long inflatable boat was found on the island with two deceased individuals on board.
The RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment, in collaboration with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, responded to the discovery. Preliminary reports suggest the inflatable boat was a lifeboat from a larger vessel named Theros.
The deceased are believed to be a 70-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman from Salt Spring Island, who were reported missing on June 18th after departing Halifax Harbour on June 11th, en route to the Azores. They have been identified as Sarah Packwood and Brett Clibbery.
The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service is working to confirm the identities.
The couple had been posting updates on their Facebook page, with their last update on June 11th, when they shared they were departing for Azores.
The investigation is ongoing with assistance from Parks Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service.
