Significant fire at Nanaimo’s Pipers Lagoon appears to be caused by fireworks: RCMP

Emergency responders are investigating a ‘significant fire’ that appears to have been started by fireworks in a Nanaimo Park.

The fire was reported around 11 p.m. on Friday, July 12th at Pipers Lagoon, located off of Hammond Bay Road, and is said to have scorched an area that measured 200’ by 400’—destroying much of the shrubbery lining a path on the east side of the park.

Police attended the scene after fire crews requested assistance, claiming that there were approximately 150 youths in the park, many of whom were seen openly consuming alcohol.

After some time, police were able to clear the youths and vehicles from the park and fire crews managed to control the fire. Fire crews remained in the park until 5 a.m. to ensure there were no flare ups.

No injuries were reported and there wasn’t any damage to any of the structures in the park.

“If not for the quick action of responding fire crews, the fire could have caused extensive damage to not only the park but also to nearby homes, “said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“This preventable fire is highly concerning due to the hot, dry conditions that are ideal for wildfires. We all need to be vigilant about our actions outdoors in the coming months,” said Tim Doyle, Chief of Nanaimo Fire Rescue.

“Smoking, fireworks, and open burning are prohibited in city parks. Please take all necessary precautions while enjoying the outdoors.”

If anyone has information on who is responsible for the fire or have eye witness or video evidence, call Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
