Langford has announced that they will be installing life rings at lakes throughout the region after a tragic incident in which a 17-year-old drowned in Langford Lake.
According to Island Health, 32 fatal drownings occurred on the island in 2023, the highest of all BC regions, and the worst year on record for the health authority.
These life rings were bought by Langford residents, Ryan Oakley and Brittany Loomis, who wanted to donate their money to improved water safety precautions.
“Council fully supports all initiatives that promote water safety and lifesaving efforts,” said Scott Goodmanson, Mayor of Langford.
“We are committed to creating awareness and providing a safer environment for residents and visitors to enjoy local lakes.”
A life ring has already been installed at Leigh Place dock, and more are being installed on Friday, July 5th at Scouts Point, Lake Park off Goldstream Avenue and Lake Point Park.
Early next week, Langford says that life rings will also be installed at the Florence Lake boat launch dock, Glen Lake Beach Park and Glen Cove dock.
The City says they will also be installing new signage near concerning bodies of water in the name of public safety.
In addition to this endeavour, Island Health is increasing their precautions as well.
A newly formed team will begin patrolling eight beaches in Greater Victoria to help keep people safe and intervene in the situation should an individual be at-risk.
They will be patrolling the following lakes five days a week, from now until August 23rd:
- Thetis Lake
- Elk Lake
- Langford Lake
- Sooke Potholes
- Matheson Lake
- Willows Beach
- Glen Lake
- Durrance Lake
