Elderly woman sexually assaulted by stranger in her Shawnigan Lake home

Another random sexual assault has been reported on southern Vancouver Island, marking the third in the past week.

In the most recent incident, an elderly woman was sexually assaulted after an unknown man broke into her Shawnigan Lake home.

The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. Tuesday on Carlton Drive. According to Shawinigan Lake RCMP, a police dog was called in to assist officers in finding the man but was unable to track him down.

Spokesperson for the RCMP in British Columbia, Cpl. Alex Bérubé, says investigators were able to seize evidence concerning the assault, and it will be forensically analyzed.

“The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information or who may possess video surveillance in the area to come forward,” said Bérubé.

RCMP describe the suspect as a Caucasian man with a medium build, between 18-32 years old, standing 5’10″ to 6’1″ tall. He was wearing a dark bicycle helmet, a light-coloured t-shirt, and had a face covering.

Shawnigan RCMP says there are no known connections to the stranger sexual assault at an apartment in Langford and a violent sexual assault that occurred in Victoria.

All suspects remain at large as of this publication.

The elderly victim in this case is being supported by victim services.
