According to Canada Post, every day their workers deliver mail to around 192,000 homes in Greater Victoria, and many of these homes have dogs.
They say that over the past month, there has been a stark increase in situations with dogs that make mail carriers feel unsafe.
“As we’re in the dog days of summer with children out of school and families on vacation, our employees are seeing a recent increase of incidents with dogs,” said Canada Post in a media release.

Canada Post added that their number one priority is to keep their workers safe, but if mail carriers don’t have safe access to a home’s mailbox or front step, they are unable to meet this goal.
To keep mail carriers safe, Canada Post is asking Greater Victoria residents with dogs to:
- Be careful when you answer the door, so your dog does not slip out
- Keep your dog inside, in a fenced yard or tied up far from the front door or mailbox
- Keep front doors and fence gates closed
- Keep your dog away from the screen door, even if it is locked
- Please ensure you have your dog on leash and under control when out walking
Canada post recognizes that the dogs they encounter are prone to be protective of their homes and families. However, when a dog is placed between a mail carrier and a mailbox, Canada Post employees can not be sure of how it will react to them.
