BC-based data analysts, Research Co. conducted a survey of Canadians across the country to get their opinions on how the current Canadian health care system is working for them.
According to their survey, 58% of British Columbians think the current Canadian health care system needs to see some changes in order to make it work better, however these respondents admitted there are some good things about it.
In contrast to the 58% who believe some changes are needed, 23% said they thought the system works well as-is, 17% said it needs to be completely rebuilt from the ground up and 2% said they were unsure.
In terms of what BC respondents believe is the worst problem with the Canadian health care system, 41% said the shortage of doctors and nurses is the biggest issue, 16% said it is long wait times, 14% said the issue is bureaucracy and poor management and 12% said that poor resources and facilities are the worst thing about it.
When asked how confident the respondents in British Columbia were that if they had an urgent medical condition arise, they would be taken care of promptly, 64% had confidence in the system and 36% lacked confidence.
Interestingly, this survey also suggests that most British Columbians and Canadains as a whole do not want to sacrifice any funding towards health care spending.
In BC, 78% of those who were polled said that they do not want funding cuts for health care, while just 15% said they would like to see cuts made.
Canada-wide, these statistics were similar with 73% saying they don’t want health care cuts and 19% said they would.
When asked if Canada should privatize its health care system, similarly to how things work in the United States, many were uncertain.
To this question, 20% of British Columbians said they were unsure, 46% said they do not want privatized health care and 34% said they would like to see it privatized.
Of those who were in favour of privatization, it is worth noting that only 4% said they “strongly agree”.
What do you think of the current state of health care in Canada and across BC? Are you in favour of privatized health care?
