Saanich residents are to see another rental unit go up!
Saanich Council has officially approved the zoning bylaw amendment that will allow the Nellie McClung Library and Affordable Housing Project to proceed.
This redevelopment will take place at the Nellie McClung Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) site, located at 3950 Cedar Hill Road.
In partnership with the Capital Region Housing Corporation (CRHC), the development will bring a 25,000 to 30,000 square foot library—double the current library’s size, and up to 210 affordable rental housing units.
“This is a first-of-its-kind project for Saanich, using District property to build affordable housing, and Council couldn’t be more excited about it,” said Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock.
“At a time when the need for affordable housing is greater than ever, this project will help more people find homes that meet their needs.”
Murdock added that in addition to the new rentals, residents will get to enjoy a revitalized library and public space and the location offers multiple services—including transit, schools, parks, shopping and more.
“This project gives more people the chance to put down roots and build a life in our growing community.”
GVPL staff have expressed their excitement for this development, as it will bring a great new chapter for the library, enhancing the community’s experience.
“This approval marks the starting point of an exciting new chapter for our library…[It] will enable us to create an enhanced and modernized space designed to meet the evolving needs of our community,” said Andrew Appleton, GVPL Board Chair.
Appleton also expressed that they’ll be working closely with the District of Saanich to minimize disruption to the current library services during the project by finding a temporary space.
Next steps for the project will include a design phase, set to take place over the next few months. They aim to begin demolition in the summer of 2025, with completion marked for 2028.
