‘Strath laughs’: There’s a new monthly comedy event happening in downtown Victoria

Heads up, comedy lovers—a new comedy hotspot is in town!

Paul McKinnon with Amps 2-11 Productions has announced the addition of a new monthly comedy event held in the Maple Room, above the Sticky Wicket in the Strathcona Hotel.

Cleverly titled “Strath Laughs,” this bundle of joy will host its inaugural event on Friday, May 24th with a series of emerging-to-experienced comedians.

The rotation of comedians is always changing and they’re almost always local (with some exceptions from those traveling from elsewhere on the island), so you know you’re getting the best of Victoria!

The Strath Laughs’ headliner for May is Drew Farrance, who also hosts The Mint’s popular Phillips Comedy Night every Wednesday.

Other performers include Beerinder Malik, Darren Millar, David Stanford, Shenoa Tobin, and Emily Woods.

“I always like to see a few new faces on a show, it’s always good to have some new talent to mix things up a bit,” Strath Laughs host McKinnon told Victoria Buzz.

You may recognize McKinnon from the beloved Fernwood Comedy Night, hosted at the Fernwood Inn!

If you’ve had the pleasure of attending one of these events, then you’ll be treated to a similar formula at Strath Laughs, as both are organized by Amps 2-11 Productions.

Plus, ticket prices will be the same, $15—one main difference is that tickets that don’t sell online will be available at the door for $20 cash.

When asked why he chose to host new monthly events in addition to the existing Fernwood Comedy Nights, he said it’s mainly to give the comedians more of a chance to perform, highlighting the importance of them getting time on stage.

“Fernwood Comedy Nights have become very popular not only with the audience, but also with the performers themselves, [so] now, because of the rotation system we’ve got in place, many of the comics have to wait six months before they can be on the show again,” he said.

“We want to give local comedians another venue where they can perform, and give audiences more opportunities to see local live comedy.”

McKinnon is excited to add this comedy night to a downtown venue, hoping that passersby will be intrigued and continue coming back to check out their shifting roster of amazing comedians.

And with the intimate setting of Maple Wood, guests are sure to get their fix of laughs in a lively, up-close-and-personal atmosphere.

Tickets for the Friday, May 24th show can be purchased here—there are other shows booked for June, which will sport a Pride theme, and July.

This is a 19+ event.
