A popular Nanaimo dance duo made it to the finals of the television series Canada’s Got Talent, but fell just shy of taking home the $1-million grand prize on Tuesday.
Funkanometry, starring Jacksun Fryer and Carlow Rush, nabbed second place in the popular competition, which was decided entirely by fan votes.
The duo ended up losing to Rebecca Strong, a singer from Prince Albert, SK, who performed an impressive rendition of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”
According to Citytv, the $1-million prize is the largest ever awarded on a Canadian television show.
There were four acts on the show from Vancouver Island, but Funkanometry was the only group to make it to the finals of Canada’s Got Talent.
For their grand finale on the show Tuesday, May 14th, Fryer and Rush took a risk by putting the flow of their routine in the hands of judges Howie Mandel, Lilly Singh, Trish Stratus, and Kardinal Offishall.
The judges could control them “like a video game” with paddles that read “faster,” “slower,” or “reverse.” As they danced to Queen’s “We Are the Champions,” the duo adjusted their routine to fit the directives.
The hip hop and popping dance duo previously reached the semifinals of America’s Got Talent in 2022. They are the second act from central Vancouver Island to make it to the finals of Canada’s Got Talent in two years; Lantzville’s Raymond Salgado also made it to the season finale in 2023.
