In the words of Jack Knox, this book sale is a promised “word nerd heaven.”
This year, the iconic Times Colonist (TC) Book Sale is taking over the Victoria Curling Club on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th, and will contain every genre under the sun!
Doors will be open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Prices are unbeatable, with $2 softcovers and $4 hardcovers, you’re not going to want to miss out on the glorious bliss of bibliosmia and digging through the endless heaps of titles.
You’ll be able to find children’s books downstairs and the Religion, Self-Help and Health sections upstairs in the curling club lounge.
Find your new book boyfriend, go on your next adventure, learn some new facts, brush up on a language, dive into a new skill or hobby and so much more!
Accepted payment types include debit, MasterCard, Visa, American Express or cash.
As described, there will indeed be an around-the-block line before opening on Saturday, but have no fear, there will be plenty left by the time you make it there.
There’s a wheelchair-accessible ramp at the middle door beside the parking lot, so the main floor is wheelchair accessible but there are no elevators to the other floors.
You’re encouraged to bring your own reusable bags, however, there will be bags and cardboard boxes at the club if you buy 15 more than you were intending to—it’s okay, it happens.
They’re also telling people to eat before you go as the Curling Club cafe won’t be open.
If you’re curious, the TC book sale launched in 1998 to fund literacy programs on Vancouver Island. The planners are said to have had no idea how many books would be donated and were delighted by the interest and success.
The 1998 sale brought in a whopping $20,800. The 2023 event raised $300,000, shared between over 200 recipients—mainly schools!
From those numbers it’s clear that the sale has grown exponentially and has gained so much support from both the community and government.
For example, the money raised is now matched by provincial government funds through Decoda Literacy Solutions. Grants totalling $6.7 million have been distributed since the first sale!
