Metal theft has reached a new low on Vancouver Island, as a local cemetery becomes the latest target of a string of brazen thefts.
Over the past two weeks, approximately 12 to 14 bronze vases have been stolen from grave sites at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, located at 2347 Cedar Road.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, the thefts began around May 12th, with the most recent incident reported on May 17th.
These bronze vases, often purchased by family members and used to hold flowers or other personal items at grave sites, have been taken without a trace.
“These thefts are extremely disturbing. First and foremost the families who purchased the vases then placed them next to their loved ones are simply outraged that someone would resort to stealing something as personal as this. Also, there is really no commercial value for bronze so overall, it just doesn’t any sense at all,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
The vases in question range between 9 to 12 inches in height and weigh approximately two pounds, depending on the style. Despite the detailed descriptions and attached photos provided by the families, no suspects have been identified.
Nanaimo RCMP are urging anyone with information about these thefts to come forward. Tips can be submitted to the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
