Construction is underway for a new six-storey air traffic control tower at Victoria International Airport.

This innovative tower will feature a control cab offering a panoramic 360-degree view of the airport and will be equipped with state-of-the-art air traffic management, communication, and aviation surveillance systems.

These advancements are necessary to accommodate the growing volume of aircraft operations at YYJ.

Anticipated to be finalized by 2027, the new tower will soar to a height of 90 feet, significantly surpassing the stature of the current air traffic tower, originally erected in 1958.

The new control tower will have much better sight lines over the airfield, according to Raymond Bohn, President and CEO, NAV CANADA.

“Additionally, to support our net-zero goals by 2050, we are adopting comprehensive strategies to ensure the sustainability of our new facilities.”

Victoria International Airport ranks as the 11th busiest airport in Canada based on passenger arrivals and departures.

Since 2021, YYJ has witnessed a consistent uptick in passenger traffic with nearly 2 million passengers each year.

In the previous year, the airport welcomed over 1.7 million passengers, nearly tripling the figures from 2021.

Air-traffic controllers will continue working in the existing tower until the new structure is completed.
