The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia is investigating an incident in Nanaimo involving an individual who sustained injuries while in police custody.
According to reports, on December 8th, Nanaimo RCMP detained a man with outstanding warrants without any altercation.
Subsequently, police said he was transferred to holding cells, where he was slated to remain until Wednesday, December 13th. However, on December 10th, the man experienced a medical emergency and sustained an injury.
According to IIO, at around 11:45 a.m., the man in custody collapsed unexpectedly inside a police cell.
Upon the occurrence of the medical episode, paramedics were called in, and the man was transported to the hospital for treatment where it was determined to be a serious injury.
The IIO has taken on the responsibility of investigating the actions undertaken by the police during this particular incident.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency for the police in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers that lead to serious harm or death, regardless of whether any allegations of wrongdoing are made.
