Here’s how Vancouver Islanders can help those displaced by BC wildfires

As of this publication, there are over 370 wildfires raging across BC with the interior being most heavily impacted.

Over 30,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and as of Monday, August 21st, Premier David Eby said that at least 50 structures, including people’s homes, had been destroyed by the wildfires in West Kelowna alone, despite firefighters best efforts.

The number of structures destroyed has now grown to at least 200.

A state of emergency was issued by the province on Saturday, August 19th, that restricted  traveling or seeking accommodations in regions stricken by wildfires so that evacuees can find somewhere to stay and get out of dangerous areas swiftly.

Many British Columbians have been left at hotels, motels or sleeping at evacuation centres and are left to wonder whether their homes have been destroyed or not. In many cases, they had to pack up a bag with very little time and leave their house, not knowing if they’ll ever be able to return.

If you are looking to help those who have been impacted by the devastating BC wildfire crisis, here’s how you can get funds into the hands of the right people and organizations:

  • CanadaHelps – This organization makes giving to specific, grassroots charities easier for people who don’t have boots on the ground to know who needs funds to help evacuees. The Central Okanagan Food Bank is one on their list which is providing much needed food supplies for evacuees while the YMCA is getting financial assistance to folks who have left their homes behind by way of their BC Wildfires Evacuee Support.
  • United Way – The BC chapter of United Way began their wildfire support initiative during the 2021 season which was the most widespread and costly year to date before this year. Their recovery effort helps support the emotional and physical health of those impacted, gaining them access to food as well as trauma and mental health supports.
  • Canadian Red Cross – The official recommended organization to donate to, according to the province. They have a specific BC wildfires appeal in which you can be certain your donation will be going directly to the ongoing relief effort as well as preparedness and risk reduction for future all-hazard disaster events.
  • BC SPCA – Animals have constant emotional and physical needs too and BC SPCA has been laser focussed on providing support for owners and their animals. They are helping with animals who were left behind as well as providing resources for animals and their owners once evacuated.

In situations like these, every little bit helps an individual or family have access to food, shelter and support while they feel like their whole lives have been torn out from underneath them.
