Less than a year after the closing of his business, the Patch, local businessman Chistopher George Shurety passed away on January 28th at the age of 48-years-old.
Shurety was well-known throughout Victoria for his larger-than-life personality and the collection of vintage clothing he acquired to sell at his Yates Street store.
The Patch became a mainstay among Victorian thrifters and vintage fashion enthusiasts in its more than 20-years of existence.
In 2022, Shurety announced the closure of his business along with a close-out sale that allowed customers to rummage through the seemingly endless basement packed full of vintage splendor.
The closure was brought on by financial problems exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and a landlord that was difficult for him to deal with. Cherry Bomb Toys announced their tentative move into the old Patch space on May the fourth, 2023.
Shurety was born in South Africa and immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of 4-years-old. Prior to living in Victoria he and his family spent time in Owen Sound and London, Ontario.
His family and friends knew him as an intelligent, talented and colourful man with degrees in chemistry and biology from universities in Waterloo and Victoria.
He leaves behind his mother and father as well as two sisters who will no doubt miss him dearly along with many other Vicorians.
Shurety’s family is asking that those who wish to show their condolences, make a memorial donation to the Esquimalt United Church.
At this time, Shurety’s cause of death remains undisclosed.
