Major BC Ferries sailings from Vancouver Island cancelled ahead of “hurricane force winds”

All major BC Ferries sailings past 3 p.m. have been cancelled due to what the Crown corporation calls “hurricane force winds” forecast for the south island.

Sailings in both directions from Vancouver Tsawwassen terminal to all south island terminals have been cancelled from 3 p.m. onwards.

Environment Canada has issued a wind advisory predicting southeast winds of 70 to 90 km/h developing in Greater Victoria early in the evening on Wednesday.

According to the National Hurricane Centre, the lowest type of “hurricane force winds” is categorized at sustained gusts of 119 – 153 km/h.

In light of these cancellations, travellers are advised to check the status of their sailing on the BC Ferries website before embarking on their journey.

At this time, BC Transit continues to operate all buses to and from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal.
