Daycare evacuated in downtown Victoria synagogue due to police incident (UPDATED)

UPDATE: The man was apprehended by police and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Damage to the interior of the building has been reported. Police are now investigating the incident.

Earlier: Victoria Police and Greater Victoria Emergency Response Teams have evacuated the daycare inside Congregation Emanu-El, a synagogue in downtown Victoria.

According to VicPD, police were called just after 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning for reports of an “unwanted person”.

When they arrived, they found a man who had barricaded himself inside the building after suffering from a mental health crisis.

A section of Blanshard Street near Pandora Ave has been taped off and traffic is reduced to one lane.

VicPD, Emergency Response Team, Saanich Police and K9 are on site.

The public is advised to avoid the area.
