A man in his 50s was seriously injured when an SUV hit him as he attempted to cross the Island Highway near Shoreline Drive Wednesday night.

The incident happened around 6 p.m., and the Island Highway was closed in both directions for several hours as West Shore RCMP investigated.

Witnesses told police the pedestrian exited a bus and then began to jaywalk across the roadway. The weather reduced visibility, and the vehicle attempted to stop but was unable to do so in time.

According to Chek News, the man suffered head injuries and was taken Victoria General Hospital.

The driver of the SUV remained on the scene and was co-operative with police.

“Our police officers are investigating the collision and continue to interview persons involved. The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with investigators fully,” said Const. Matthew Baker of the West Shore RCMP. “Incidents such as this are a reminder to slow down in reduced visibility that comes with poor weather.”

The victim remains in ICU at Victoria General Hospital hospital in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
