A Victoria man is in custody and has been taken to hospital to be assessed after he barricaded himself inside a residence in the 500-block of Cecelia Road Saturday.
Police were dispatched the home at around 10 am. Nearby streets were closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and nearby residents advised to stay in their homes out of an abundance of caution.
Police did not say why they were called to the location.
Heavily armed officers could be seen surrounding the home for most of the day.
“Based on information from the scene, officers believed the man may be armed or have access to weapons in the residence,” said Victoria police spokesman Bowen Osoko. “The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) was activated along with our crisis negotiators and other members of our team.”
Specially-trained negotiators were called in to work with the man to resolve the situation.
Just before 2:30 pm, the man exited the residence and gave himself over to officers to be into custody without further incident.. He was brought to hospital for assessment.
Osoko said officers are now working to ensure the residence and surrounding area are safe and that any weapons are recovered.
The investigation is ongoing.
