Saanich police are warning pet owners to watch out for aggressive deer after two separate incidents over the weekend where dogs were agressively pursued by deer.
In the first incident, Romeo Strasbourg was walking his dog on Borden Street when he heard a noise from behind. He turned around, and it was a deer about three feet behind from him.
Strasbourg said he tried to scare the deer away, but the deer actively pursued him and his dog.
He then grabbed his dog and took refuge on a nearby porch, but the doe followed them onto the porch before eventually leaving the area. The deer did not injure the man and the dog.
The second incident happened in Gordon Head. Police said a different man was playing in his yard with his dog when a deer entered the yard and tried to attack his dog.
The resident got a baseball bat, and swung it at the deer and yelled until it went away. The deer returned to the property three times.
“While deer may seem to be placid and non-threatening, we must keep in mind they are still wild animals, and by instinct may forcefully, and aggressively, defend their young against perceived threats,” Staff Sgt. Chris Horsley said in a statement.
