A police dog was deployed in Nanaimo after an allegedly agitated 47-year-old man walked into traffic.

The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. on Monday, October 18th near the intersection of Alberta and Cavan Streets.

The incident occurred as an off duty officer with his police dog, Herc, saw the man walk into traffic.

When the officer noticed the incident he radioed for police.

Soon after, the man allegedly approached several citizens.

The officer got out of his truck and with Herc at his side attempted to engage the individual in conversation.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the man was distraught and began to threaten the officer and Herc, as well as walk in and out of traffic.

As other officers arrived, the police dog handler told the man he was under arrest and to get on the ground.

Police said the man did not comply with orders, which Nanaimo RCMP said justified the deployment of a police dog.

Officers quickly took the man into custody.

The suspect was taken by officers to hospital for several puncture wounds, where he was treated and then taken to police cells.

Officers said the man admitted while at the hospital that he had consumed a large quantity of cocaine earlier in the day.

The man was fit to be released and was served with an appearance notice for one count of Uttering Threats for a court date in December.
