Greater Victoria on track for record-low precipitation in October

Share

For those who have felt like things haven’t been as rainy as normal in Victoria this October, there’s some data to back that feeling up.

According to data from The Weather Network, Victoria is on track to have a record-low season when it comes to precipitation levels.

Victoria has had just 2.6 millimetres of rain this month as of October 18th, representing only 3% of its typical 96.1 millimetres in the same timeframe.

Zooming out to look at the whole year, Victoria has received 349.1 millimetres of rain, or 57% of the annual average precipitation from January to October.

The Weather Network says that a ridge of high pressure over the northeastern Pacific Ocean is much of the reason for this lack of rain, creating a blocking pattern and steering the usual fall storm towards Yukon and Alaska.

There seems to be no expectation for significant rainfall before early next week, although some light rainfall is expected for the weekend.

There does seem to be some hope for beneficial rainfall on the horizon, with long-range computer models hinting at a strong low pressure system developing offshore, which may bring some much-needed precipitation to the region.
