Looking to enjoy some live music this Saturday?
Pacific Opera Victoria is set to hold a free event this Saturday, September 12th in locations across downtown Victoria.
The event, dubbed ‘Land, Language & Songs,’ will give audiences the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of music, storytelling and discovery.
The event is a part of Pacific Opera Victoria’s Found in Translation initiative, intended to celebrate Indigenous languages and languages brought to Canada by newcomers.
According to Pacific Opera Victoria, the free walking event will explore how language, music and place connect people to each other and land.
The performance will begin with an opening gathering at Songhees Point from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m., where Songhees Knowledge Keeper Yuxwelupton Qwal’ qaxala (Bradley Dick) will offer a welcome alongside Pacific Opera Victoria artists.
At Songhees Park, attendees will be able to follow a guided walking route linking four Spingle Whorl public art installations.
Organizers suggest bringing a blanket to the opening gathering, which is expected to be at least 30 minutes long.
The show will then continue to Victoria City Hall, followed by the Inner Harbour and then the Royal BC Museum before finishing at Beacon Hill Park.
There will be a short musical performance at each location before the procession moves on.
The journey features Pacific Opera Victoria artists performing works in Cree, Anishinaabe, Nuu-chah-nulth, Dakota, Toisan, Hindi, Japanese and more, with stories and songs that aim to highlight and celebrate the linguistic diversity of the region.
Participation in the event is free, and organizers say attendees may join for the whole experience or for any of the scheduled stops.
