Two people were killed in an apartment fire in Duncan this Friday, August 21st.
At approximately 2:30 a.m., the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, Duncan Fire Department, North Cowichan Fire Department and Cowichan Bay Fire Department responded to a fire on Government Street in Duncan.
According to RCMP, firefighters were able to contain the apartment fire to one building and all tenants were evacuated.
Police noted that the fire is considered suspicious in nature.
Over 50 residents of the building were reportedly displaced due to the fire and Emergency Management Services was activated to assist with them.
Police confirmed that injuries were sustained and that there were two fatalities.
“At this time, to respect the families involved, the names of the deceased will not be released,” said North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.
North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Serious Crime Team, the Duncan Fire Department, BC Coroner Services and the Office of the Fire Commissioner are actively investigating the blaze to determine the cause and circumstances.
