Beloved Salish Sea Lantern Festival returns to Sidney this weekend

Share

One of Sidney’s most beloved events returns to the township this weekend.

The Salish Sea Lantern Festival will take place on Saturday, August 22nd from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., bringing with it live performances and family-friendly activities throughout the evening, followed by the lantern procession.

Since August 16th, lantern installations have been placed throughout the community in anticipation for the festival this weekend.

Residents and visitors have been able to participate in lantern-building workshops or watch online tutorials to create their very own lanterns for the procession. Retailers in town have also been giving away lantern kits.

The culmination of these events this week results in a festival on Saturday.

The festival will begin at 6:30 p.m., with face painting, temporary tattoos and some time to appreciate the lanterns and costumes.

At 7:00 p.m., there will be an official welcome from municipal representatives and the emcee.

Daniel Cook and the Radiators will take to the stage for some live music at 7:15 p.m., blending finger-style folk, bass-driven funk, tender ballads, reggae and rock, all rooted in country vibes.

During the festival, there will be food vendors and a craft tent for creating cup lanterns and donations. There will also be memory lanterns available for purchase, which can be dedicated to a favourite memory, beloved pet or someone special.

At 8:30 p.m., the main event kicks off.

The Lantern Parade will begin at the Bandshell in Beacon Park, proceed along the Sidney Waterfront Walkway, and conclude in Eastview Park by the walking pier.

Attendees will be able to see interactive costumed characters and large-scale lanterns along the parade route.
