Heads up if you’re golfing in Colwood!
People living or spending time near the Olympic View Golf Club are being urged to stay alert after two young wolves were spotted in the area earlier this week.
The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) says it received a report on June 22nd that two juvenile wolves had been seen near Olympian Way, close to the golf course.
The sighting itself occurred two days earlier, on June 20th.
As a precaution, warning signs have now been posted around the area to alert residents, golfers and visitors.
While conservation officers say the wolves have not displayed any aggressive or conflict behaviour, they’re reminding the public to take extra precautions if they encounter the animals.
People are encouraged to keep pets on a leash, remain aware of their surroundings and never approach wolves, giving them plenty of space if spotted.
In another sighting, one nearby resident reported seeing what appeared to be a wolf in the Lagoon neighbourhood below the grounds of Royal Roads University.
In the post shared by the Colwood Community Association, resident Tim Carver wrote that a wolf walked past his townhouse while tracking a deer.
“I didn’t have my camera handy, but a wolf just walked by our townhouse just below Royal Roads property in the Lagoon district. He was tracking a deer. Keep an eye out,” said Carver.
The BCCOS says conservation officers will continue monitoring wolf activity in the area and will respond as necessary to help ensure public safety.
Although wolves are generally wary of people and attacks are rare, anyone who observes aggressive wolf behaviour is asked to report it immediately to the BC Conservation Officer Service by calling 1-877-952-7277.
