Langford chosen as site for Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple

Residents now have a clearer picture of what the future Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple will look like and where it will be built.

The church has announced the official location, complete with an exterior design rendering and groundbreaking date for the long-awaited temple.

The temple will be constructed on a 4.7-acre property along Mantle Heights Road in Langford.
Plans call for a single-storey building measuring approximately 11,400 square feet, along with a patron waiting area.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, August 22nd. Elder James E. Evanson of the Church’s Canada Area Presidency will preside over the event.

The temple was first announced in April 2024 and will become the second temple in British Columbia, joining the Vancouver British Columbia Temple.

According to the church, Canada is home to more than 211,000 members who worship in approximately 500 congregations across the country.

Existing temples are located in Calgary, Cardston, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Regina, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg, with another temple currently under construction in Lethbridge.

Temples differ from regular church “meetinghouses” and are considered sacred places of worship where members participate in religious ceremonies, make covenants and seek spiritual guidance and reflection.

For many members across Vancouver Island, the announcement marks a significant milestone after years of anticipation.

“The announcement of a temple in Victoria is a tremendous blessing not only for our local members but for the communities on Vancouver Island,” said Gary Anderson, a local church leader.

“Having this sacred space closer to home will foster unity and spiritual growth and is a profound statement of peace, offering a serene sanctuary for reflection and worship.”

Church officials say the temple will serve members throughout Greater Victoria and Vancouver Island while also providing opportunities for community engagement, service and interfaith dialogue.

Before the temple is formally dedicated, the church plans to host a public open house, allowing residents of all faiths and backgrounds to tour the building and learn more about its purpose and significance.
