Long-standing Victoria brewpub celebrates grand reopening under new name and ownership

Brass Monkey Brewing & Taproom, formerly Moon Under Water, is celebrating their new name and grand reopening this week!

It was announced last summer that after 13 years of brewing, Moon Under Water had sold and would be taken over by new ownership.

The brewpub began as a family business, being run by brewmaster Clay Potter, along with his wife and parents, Anne and Steve Potter.

Now, Anne and Steve have entered retirement and handed the reins over to Clay’s new business partners, Morgan Watson and Jason Clifford.

Together, they rebranded the brewery and are now ready to celebrate the changes they’ve brought to the business.

The new owners have confirmed the rebrand was inspired by the iconic Beastie Boys, and want to showcase a renewed focus on food, beer and atmosphere.

Those who were Moon Under Water “Stans” need not worry, as many fan-favourite beers will remain available on tap and in cans, but the brewery has also introduced new releases that pay homage to the nostalgic music that inspired the rebrand.

Some examples of their music-inspired brews are the Scaramouche Scaramouche Bohemian Pilsner, the High Dough Hazy IPA, a Hard Days Light Lager, The Beer Formerly Known as Moon Juice and Chickity-Check West Coast IPA.

The new food menu includes the taproom’s well-known chicken wings, but also some new items like smash burgers and Cubanos.

As for the new atmosphere, Brass Monkey is leaning into a more music-forward identity, with the launch party featuring two DJs who will be spinning some old-school hip-hop, funk and soul.

According to the brewery’s owners, patrons can expect more live music to be announced soon as the space will be offered up as a venue for the music scene to embrace.

Brass Monkey Brewery & Taproom launch party:

  • Where: Brass Monkey Brewing & Taproom, 350 Bay Street
  • When: Friday, February 27th, at 7 p.m.
