The District of Saanich just announced that their archives department is celebrating BC Heritage Week by putting together a community cookbook that is to be accompanied by a new exhibit.
Saanich has put out an open call for locals to submit recipes that may be included in the cookbook.
The theme for this community cookbook will be “Stir the Pot,” and is meant to highlight food as a form of heritage that connects Saanich residents to the land, culture, ancestors and memory of their neighbours in the community.
“The recipes we cook and share help tell the story of who we are and where we come from, and we want to hear from you,” said the District in a media release.
The District is looking for recipes of all kinds, including family recipes passed down through generations, original recipes and recipes that are fit for group gatherings.
Recipes can be submitted by email or in person at the Saanich Archives during operating hours. The District asks that submissions include how the author wishes to be credited.
The recipe submission deadline is February 22nd.
Once finished, the cookbook will be published digitally on the Saanich Archives website for the public to access and enjoy at no cost.
For those interested, or looking for inspiration of what recipe to submit, the Saanich Archives has set up a new exhibit on the second floor of the municipal hall that focuses on agriculture’s role in Saanich history.
