Mount Washington is pausing night time skiing this weekend so they can make snow due to lack of winter weather.
Vancouver Island has faced warmer temperatures than usual and minimal snowfall, making it difficult for ski mountains to remain open.
By scaling back on nighttime operations, the team can focus on making snow when conditions allow. They’re keeping their fingers crossed for cold temperatures over the next few days, with nights expected to drop around 0 degrees.
During this short pause, Night Pass Holders can enjoy daytime skiing Thursday to Saturday. Currently, only two chair lifts—Whisky Jack Chair and Carpets—are running.
As skiers hold out hope for fresh snow this weekend, Mount Washington is taking matters into their own hands, using snowmaking to keep the slopes ready for action.
Night skiing will resume once more snow is produced.
Meanwhile, Mount Cain is also feeling the effects of the mild weather. In a January 21st Facebook post, the mountain announced it will pause operations completely this weekend while awaiting snowfall.
Unlike Mount Washington, the company does not have snowmaking machines.
They also announced that any accommodation bookings for this time will be refunded.
They’re determined to make the most of the current weather and bring the winter magic back as soon as possible.
