A 17-year-old Saanich teen remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run following a late-night altercation in Richmond over the weekend.
According to Richmond RCMP, officers were called shortly after 11:25 p.m. on January 10th to reports of a disturbance in the 4200 block of No. 3 Road. When police arrived, they found a 17-year-old male unconscious and bleeding.
BC Emergency Health Services transported the teen to hospital, where he remains in life-threatening condition.
Police say their initial investigation indicates the teen was struck by a motor vehicle following an altercation near the roadway.
An alleged assault causing bodily harm related to that altercation is also under investigation. The driver involved did not remain at the scene.
Investigators believe the suspect vehicle is a dark-coloured 2014 to 2019 Ford Fiesta with damage to the front end.
“Failing to stop after a collision is a serious offence,” said Const. Rae Hu, an investigator with the Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit, in a statement.
The Serious Crime Unit has assumed conduct of both investigations, which remain active and ongoing.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign launched by family members identifies the teen as Myles, the 17-year-old son of a Saanich family.
According to the campaign, Myles is currently in a medically induced coma and has suffered multiple fractures, three brain bleeds, and a punctured lung.
He has undergone three surgeries since the collision.
An update shared by the family on January 13th says recent CT scans show the brain bleeds have not worsened, though doctors are keeping him sedated to avoid dangerous spikes in blood pressure and heart rate.
The family says the focus remains on protecting his brain while he continues to receive intensive care.
The fundraiser states Myles’ parents are currently staying in Vancouver while he is hospitalized and are facing lost income and additional expenses while caring for their other children.
Video circulating on social media appears to show the teen involved in a fight in a parking lot near Aberdeen Station before running across the roadway, where he was struck by a vehicle that did not stop.
Police have not confirmed the video’s contents and say all aspects of the incident remain under investigation.
Richmond RCMP are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage from the area around No. 3 Road at the time to contact police at (604) 278-1212 and quote file number 2026-1055.
Anyone wishing to support the family can find the GoFundMe campaign online. As of publication, more than $17,000 had been raised toward the family’s $40,000 goal.
