An 18-year-old e-scooter rider was seriously injured following a collision with an SUV in Colwood on Thursday afternoon.

West Shore RCMP say the crash happened at around noon on November 20th, when officers were called to the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Belmont Road.

According to police, the teen was travelling downhill on an e-scooter along Belmont Road when a 2004 Lexus RX330 made a left turn toward eastbound Ocean Boulevard, resulting in a head-on collision.

The rider suffered life-threatening injuries and was treated on scene by Colwood Fire Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services before being transported to hospital.

West Shore RCMP say the driver of the SUV, a 45-year-old woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Police have ruled out impairment and say charges could be considered once the investigation is complete.

Shortly after the incident, a witness described seeing emergency crews surrounding a damaged e-scooter and a vehicle stopped near a crosswalk.

On social media, a woman identifying herself as the teen’s mother said her son was on his way to work at the time of the crash and suffered multiple fractures.

She added that glare from sunlight may have been a factor and urged riders to wear full-face helmets when travelling at higher speeds.

“He has lots of face abrasions, and will need plastic surgery to fix the area around his eye and jaw,” she added.

He is expected to remain in hospital while recovering from his injuries.
