Coastal flooding risk for Greater Victoria as high tides meet strong southeast winds

Environment Canada has issued a coastal flooding statement for most of Vancouver Island on Wednesday and into Thursday.

The weather statement warns that powerful winds and higher-than-normal tides could bring minor flooding and debris to low-lying shorelines this week.

The alert spans from Wednesday around noon to early afternoon and again Thursday afternoon, when two separate frontal systems are expected to sweep across BC’s south coast.

Both will be accompanied by strong southeast winds coinciding with high tide, an overlap that could push water levels higher than the usual astronomical tide.

“The timing of the peak southeast winds with high tide will result in potential storm surge,” the agency said Tuesday. “Water levels may exceed the highest astronomical tide.”

The advisory extends to Greater Victoria, the southern Gulf Islands, and portions of west and north Vancouver Island, including the Campbell River area.

Minor coastal flooding is considered likely along exposed shorelines, especially in low-lying areas. Roads, walkways and seaside trails could be covered with seawater or debris such as driftwood and rocks.

The statement also warns of possible coastal erosion in sensitive zones like estuaries, dunes and beaches.

Residents are urged to avoid waterfront areas during peak tide hours, particularly along Dallas Road, Sidney’s waterfront, and other open shorelines. Environment Canada notes that even small waves can pose hazards when pushed inland by storm surge.

What’s behind the flooding risk

A series of strong pacific frontal systems is moving toward Vancouver Island. The first is expected to arrive midday Wednesday, bringing rain and southeast winds; a second system will follow Thursday afternoon.

The combination of low atmospheric pressure, wind and high tide increases the likelihood of localized flooding.

High tide for Victoria’s inner harbour is expected around 1:06 p.m. Wednesday and 1:12 p.m. Thursday, aligning closely with the strongest onshore winds.
