17 Vancouver Island breweries win big at 2025 BC Beer Awards

The biggest night of the year for BC craft breweries took place last Friday in Vancouver as the 2025 BC Beer Awards were announced, deciding the best of the best from the past year in craft beer. 

Vancouver Island-based breweries were represented highly among the many breweries that made submissions, winning seven first place awards, eight second place and seven third place awards. 

In total there were 30 categories, and in those categories, 17 breweries from Vancouver Island were represented.

In addition to all these awards, two Vancouver Island breweries got special accolades from the awards ceremony. 

First, Paul Hadfield of Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub received the ‘Legend Award’ for all his hard work and leadership in the brewing industry. 

Second, Vancouver Island’s newest brewery, Checkerhead Brewing, received the Rookie of the Year Award. 

Checkerhead is located in Shirley and was started by a man who wanted to see his passions for juggling and craft beer become intertwined.
