After weeks of wet weather, the BC Wildfire Service will lift all remaining open fire prohibitions across the Coastal Fire Centre later this week.
Starting Friday, October 3rd, at 12 p.m., Category 3 fire restrictions will be removed in all areas of the region.
This follows the easing of Category 1 and Category 2 bans late last month.
The change affects areas inside and outside municipal boundaries, including parks, ecological reserves, recreation sites, and private managed forest lands.
However, officials warn that municipalities and regional districts may still set their own restrictions based on local conditions.
Residents should check with their local governments before lighting any fires.
The wildfire service reminds the public that even though restrictions are lifted, fire use must still be safe and follow provincial rules.
Anyone who violates burning regulations could face fines and penalties. If a wildfire occurs, the responsible party may need to cover firefighting costs.
As of this publication, BC Wildfire Service records show 102 active wildfires across the province, with four still classified as out of control.
To report a wildfire, the public can call *5555 on a cellphone, 1-800-663-5555 toll-free, or use the BC Wildfire Service’s mobile app.
