In mid-July, a local BC firefighter had his vehicle broken into and all his belongings stolen, including his firefighting equipment.
Chris Johnson is a wildland firefighter who travels back and forth from Alberta to BC in the summers to fight wildfires and lead new firefighters.
However, it has become difficult for him to do his job safely and properly since the theft.
“I’ve spent the past [two] years building up this gear to do my job on the fire line safely,” said Johnson.
“From boots and helmets to specialized tools and clothing, this equipment is not just expensive — it’s what keeps me safe while I protect our forests and communities.”
He added that replacing all the stolen equipment out-of-pocket was something he could not afford. Additionally, as wildfire season is his main source of income, he is unable to do his job without his equipment.
“Every day I’m sidelined is a missed paycheck — and an opportunity lost to do the work I’ve trained for,” Johnson explained.
“I’m asking for your help to get back on my feet and back in the field.”
Specifically, the stolen equipment included:
- Viberg Work Boots
- Hardhat
- Flame Proof clothing
- Wool clothing
- Tent/Sleeping Essentials
- Equipment
- Tools
- Safety Equipment
- Rain Gear
- Personal Hygiene Belongings
As a way to help get himself back out in the field fighting fires, Johnson has launched a GoFundMe online fundraiser page in order to recoup some costs.
Now he is asking anyone who can afford to help out to donate or share his message.
“Any amount you can give — or even just sharing this page — will help me replace what I lost and return to the fireline as soon as possible. I’m incredibly grateful for your support,” concluded Johnson.
As of this publication, the GoFundMe has garnered $1,200. Click here to learn more or to donate.
