Victoria psychologist publishes board book on helping kids understand big feelings

Share

Parents, babysitters, educators and anyone else that interacts with children—this may be a new go-to tool!

Being able to understand and express emotions is a major part of childhood development, and Dr. Jillian Roberts, a Victoria-based child psychologist and author, is hoping to encourage families to start these conversations early.

She is publishing a new board book titled, Feelings Come, Feelings Go, which introduces young readers to a range of emotions, while also reminding them that feelings are temporary.

Using relatable and real-life scenarios, the book aims to connect children with everyday experiences and subsequent emotions they may feel. For example, frustration when a tower of blocks fall, or shyness in meeting a new friend.

By helping the children engage with these scenarios, the young readers will be able to name their emotions and develop healthy strategies for emotional regulation from an early age.

The release date for Feelings Come, Feelings Go is August 19th. It comes shortly after the release of Dr. Roberts’ recently published picture book, The Friendship Guide, which focuses on how to be a good friend.

In addition to her work as a child psychologist and author, she’s currently a professor at the University of Victoria and a mother of three children.

She’s also known as a go-to child psychology expert amongst journalists, and she’s a regular contributor to HuffPost, Global News and CBC.

Her other books include two bestselling and award-winning series of children’s books: the Just Enough series, and the World Around Us series.
