After a lengthy investigation, a woman from Nanaimo has been charged with multiple counts of theft and fraud from a local non-profit organization and a separate business.
On Tuesday, July 29th, the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) announced that Joanne Lynette McCormick is facing two counts of theft over $5,000 and two counts of fraud over $5,000.
The charges stem from two separate time periods: April 2019 to October 2021, and November 2022 to April 2024.
McCormick, who is married to a Crown Counsel, was the subject of a Vancouver Island RCMP investigation beginning in late 2021.
Due to her spouse’s position within the Crown, the BCPS determined that a Special Prosecutor should be appointed to ensure public confidence and avoid any perception of conflict or bias in the legal process.
The appointed prosecutor later expanded in May 2024 to an additional investigation tied to another business in Nanaimo.
Following his assessment, McCormick was arrested and subsequently released on conditions to appear in court. Her scheduled date is September 30th.
At this time, no further details will be released as the matter is now before the court.
