A wildfire near Port Alberni has been deemed ‘out of control’ by the BC Wildfire Service this weekend.
The wildfire was discovered in a wilderness area on Sunday, June 8th and has since grown to be 15 hectares in size.
The location of this wildfire is about 30 kilometres west of Port Alberni, or 10 kilometres south of the westernmost tip of Sproat Lake.
The flames have engulfed a large portion of the slopes of Nahmint Mountain, making it difficult for fire crews to respond from the ground.
According to the BC Wildfire Service, the wildfire currently has three ground crews battling the flames and two helicopters responding from the air.
At this time, the wildfire is believed to have been ignited by human activity.
This wildfire is currently the only one on Vancouver Island; however, there are a total of 83 active wildfires throughout British Columbia.
