Lower traffic forces Coho ferry to delay full summer schedule until late June

If you were planning to catch a late-night Coho ferry to or from the US this June, you might want to double-check the schedule.

Black Ball Ferry Line has announced it’s scaling back plans to increase sailings of the MV Coho this month, citing a noticeable drop in travel demand.

The company had hoped to bump up to four daily sailings starting June 12th, but instead will stick with just three until June 25th.

That means all 9:30 p.m. departures from Port Angeles between June 12th and 25th are cancelled, along with the 6:10 a.m. sailings from Victoria between June 13th and 26th.

Travellers with reservations during that time have already been contacted by phone or email, and are being offered alternative sailings or full refunds.

It’s not just a scheduling tweak—it’s part of a broader trend. Black Ball says ferry traffic has dropped 14% this year, with fewer Canadians making the trip across the border.

Some of that dip is being linked to recent political tensions, including US President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs and his eyebrow-raising comments about Canada becoming the 51st state.

In a social media post, the ferry line says they don’t take the decision lightly, and thanked passengers for sticking with them during uncertain times.

The MV Coho has been a mainstay on the waters between Victoria and Port Angeles since 1959, carrying up to 1,000 passengers and 115 vehicles on its scenic 90-minute journey through the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Looking to sail this month? Best to book ahead and keep an eye on the updated schedule.
