West Shore RCMP officer buys new fishing rod for boy after frightening incident

A regular after-school hangout turned into something much more serious for 13-year-old Asher Feldman last month, after he witnessed a violent assault at Glen Lake and made the brave decision to call 911.

The incident happened on Thursday, April 17th. Asher was at the lake, which is just across the street from his home, fishing with a buddy—something the two friends, both 13, do regularly after school.

It’s usually a peaceful and familiar spot, but that day took a frightening turn.

A man, described as very intoxicated, allegedly assaulted his partner near where the boys were fishing. In the chaos, the man fell on Asher’s fishing gear, snapping the rod Asher had bought with his own money.

Despite the scary situation, Asher stayed calm, called for help, and waited for police to arrive.

One of the responding officers, Constable Lee from West Shore RCMP, was impressed by Asher’s composure that he returned the next day with a new fishing rod and tackle box to replace what had been damaged.

“Constable Lee told me that he was going to come by the next night and bring a fishing rod and when he came I was happy and excited. What I love most about fishing is the fish. Fishing with my buddy when he caught a 3 lb bass is my best memory so far. What I would tell other kids is to be brave and be strong,” Asher said to Victoria Buzz.

His mom, Kristen Feldman, says the experience has stuck with him.

“Asher is still pretty shaken by the event at the lake. It was not something he expected while fishing after school. He was scared for his safety and very upset at the events he witnessed. He has, for the time being, started fishing at a different lake to feel safe,” she said.

She added that many people have reached out to share kind words and support.

“It was so healing for Asher to have the officer who responded to protect him and others replace his beloved fishing rod. He was so proud he had bought it himself and devastated it was broken in the scuffle. The whole community is proud of him.”

Asher’s father, Steve Feldman, arrived at the lake shortly after the incident while police were still on scene.

“When I arrived at Glen Lake and saw multiple police cars I was concerned for Asher and the first question I had for him was are you okay. I am beyond proud that Asher, in spite of being in the middle of a very scary situation, phoned 911 which many might not have done,” he said.

“To Constable Lee and the other officers who donated supplies for Asher, I want to express sincere appreciation as it has helped in Asher’s getting past what he witnessed and to feel safe going fishing again. My hope for Asher is that he knows he can always reach out for help and that he is not alone.”

Fishing continues to be a source of comfort for Asher, even if he’s sticking to a different spot for now. His family hopes Glen Lake will soon feel safe again—for him and for everyone in the community.
