A Nanaimo man is facing several penalties after he was clocked speeding more than twice the limit on the Nanaimo Parkway while allegedly impaired—and on his way to pick up his child.
According to BC Highway Patrol, the incident happened just after 11 a.m. on April 14th, when an officer in an unmarked police vehicle spotted a sedan racing past near Mostar Road.
Police said the vehicle was recorded going a staggering 210 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.
“When the car was stopped, the driver said he was going to pick up his child,” said Inspector Adam Tallboy with BC Highway Patrol. “He then provided two breath samples, both of which registered a ‘fail’.”
The 31-year-old driver was handed a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and a $483 ticket for excessive speeding. His vehicle was also towed and impounded for 30 days at his expense.
“On the scale of high-risk driving, speeding past a police car while impaired, and on your way to pick up your child, is very high,” Tallboy added.
“Anyone who makes the choice to drive at extreme speeds while they are impaired is a danger to every person who uses the road.”
BC Highway Patrol says officers continue to use tools like unmarked vehicles to catch dangerous drivers and urges everyone to make safe and responsible choices behind the wheel.
