An 18-year-old driver was nabbed for ‘stunting’ in a Nanaimo parking lot on Monday, resulting in a fine and vehicle impoundment.
On February 3rd around 7 p.m., Nanaimo RCMP received reports of excessive noise and vehicles doing ‘donuts’ and burn-outs in the North Town Centre Mall parking lot.
As an officer approached, a blue Toyota 4 Runner with two occupants in the vehicle was allegedly observed driving erratically.
According to a media release, the officer recognized the suspect driver from a different encounter earlier in the day, which had ended with the officer issuing a verbal warning.
“In some cases, verbal warnings can be an effective deterrent,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
“However, in this case it didn’t seem to have any impact on the individual nor his driving habits.”
Police issued the 18-year-old driver with a ticket of $368 for driving without consideration. The fine also includes six demerit points.
As a result, his vehicle was also towed and impounded for seven days.
According to RCMP, the young man was apologetic and told the officer he had learned his lesson.
“Time will tell,” the release reads.
